Spaces in key field

Question:

When importing data from an external file, the data was not linked to the existing entries in the database, instead, new entries were created with the same key below the already existing entries. How is this possible?

Answer:

Most probably, the keys are actually not the same and contain e.g. an extra space. An extra space is seen by BioNumerics as an extra character and therefore results in a different key. For example, "Key_123" is not the same as "Key_123 " because of the space. You can easily check this by selecting Database > Change entry key and compare if both keys are identical. If this is not the case, you should use a replace command to remove additional spaces from the key fields in the external file.
